Course Description: In dentistry, we utilize many substances that can be
mischaracterized as toxic. How do we explain to patients the safety of the
substances we use if we don’t understand them ourselves? Toxicology is
considered a “sister science” to pharmacology and though dental hygienists study
pharmacology at length, very few study any aspect of toxicology. Understanding
the basic principles of toxicology can help communicate and educate patients on
substances they question regarding safety. This course aims to explain the basic
concepts of toxicology in a way that can be applicable in clinical hygiene as well
as everyday life.
Topics Covered:
• Understand the basic principles of toxicology
• Explain how hormesis applies to substances
• Discuss the difference between manmade and natural chemicals
• Describe the role of adverse outcome pathways
